Miscellaneous

Break
Students get a 15-minute break between periods 2 and 3 from 9:46–10:00 am.

Hanscom Students
Hanscom Air Force Base students make up 20-25% of the BHS population. If they have lived on the base throughout their school career, they have attended elementary and middle schools on the base, which are part of the Lincoln school system. As a result, the town of Bedford, the high school, and the school system is new to the students and their parents, even if they have lived at Hanscom for a number of years. As is typical with the military, Hanscom students are often also new to HAFB.

Hanscom students add a special diversity to the school population because of the broad backgrounds and worldwide experience they bring. At the same time, they may come into the school at any time during the school year or in any grade, from school systems that do not have standardized tests such as MCAS.

Counselors and administrators take special care to look for gaps in their education to ensure that taking the MCAS tests does not put an undue burden on the students.

Hanscom parents who have concerns about their student should contact the appropriate Guidance Counselor. Guidance Counselor assignments are in the Student/Parent Handbook.

Late Bus
There are 6 to 7 buses that leave the school between 3:45 and 4:00 pm to cover most of the bus routes in town on Monday through Thursday. There are no late buses on early release days or Fridays, so working parents will have to make arrangements to pick up their students.

Students who intend to take the late bus must be at the front of the school at 3:45 pm promptly. For details on the bus times for Boston students, contact the METCO office @ (781) 275-1700 x3247

Lost and Found
Check with the main office for lost books, calculators and items of clothing. The Athletic Office may have those missing soccer cleats or lacrosse sticks.

School Pictures
The date for underclassmen school pictures is announced by the arrival of a form in the mail at home and in announcements in early October.

BHS contracted with Burlington Studios and they mail information directly to the home. Parents should check the principal’s newsletter, BHSPA eNewsletter and announcements for the date and call Burlington Studios if they haven’t received an information packet two weeks before the picture date. Their number is 781-272-4700.

The pictures are used for the student’s annual ID cards. There is a retake date announced at school for students who miss the school picture date.

Senior Yearbook Pictures
Prospective Seniors are responsible for making arrangements to have their Yearbook pictures taken directly with Burlington Studios at 781-272-4700.  Link to BHS Site Yearbook Page

Tournaments of Plays
The Tournament of Plays is a competition run by the Drama Club, in which each class presents a one-act play that is written by the students. Each class has an Advisor who arranges auditions and directs the students in the play. Auditions are in October and the dates and times are given during the daily announcements.

On Tournament of Plays night, to which students and parents are invited, a panel of judges presents awards for Best Actress, Best Actor, Best New Actress, Best New Actor, Best Ensemble, and Best Play.
